reorienting our sensing

Planetary Listening is a group of international, interdisciplinary artists and researchers, which formed in Berlin in 2021 with the intention to think together around questions such as: What might it mean to listen beyond the human?

Is it possible to reorient our sensing, and understanding of voice and agency, to extend toward other life-forms? Can artistic practices open pathways of co-existence and ecological collaboration so as to nurture sustainable futures and planetary imaginaries?

Following a series of study sessions throughout 2022, including realizing a number of creative projects in sound and radio, Planetary Listening is aiming to build greater activity in the area of ecological, planetary practices which can contribute to the artistic cultures and communities of Berlin. This includes directing a newly founded project space in Prenzlauer Berg, which serves as a creative environment for sharing knowledge and experience.

As the reality of climate change becomes ever-more present, greater ecological emphasis and engagement within the arts is taking place. Within this larger cultural turn, Planetary Listening is interested in how listening, and the histories and practices of the sound arts, can contribute by nurturing new planetary practices and knowledge.

Participants include: Kat Austen, Miguel Buenrostro, Kate Donovan, Heather Frasch, Florence Freitag, Francisca Rocha Goncalves, Brandon LaBelle, Michelle-Marie Letelier, Carla J. Maier, Samuel Perea-Diaz, Eleni-Ira Panourgia, and Daniela Medina Poch.
